While they’ve been the accepted standard for years, hospital births aren’t ideal for a lot of parents. Having to juggle rushed prenatal appointments and loss of autonomy in the delivery room can be pretty frustrating. Add in a recovery enhanced by the bright lights and loud noises of the hospital, and you have the recipe for a terrible birth experience. And while home births might seem like the perfect alternative, it’s simply not an option for many families. Birth centres are a happy medium for people who don’t want either a hospital or home birth. At birth centres, you’ll be in a home-like environment where you’ll be aided by professionals. Plus, birth centres have more power to honor your traditions so you can have a birth experience that’s meaningful for you. If you’ve been looking for options for your delivery, I’d love to tell you about the Toronto Birth Centre.
About Toronto Birth Centre
Since its founding, the Toronto Birth Centre has been committed to providing pregnant people with an inviting and inclusive space to deliver. The centre is operated by Indigenous community members dedicated to giving people options for a profound birth experience. The midwives at the practice are committed to breaking down barriers in healthcare while fighting colonial injustice. As you walk through the centre, you’ll see artwork completed by the midwives as well as celebrations of Indigenous culture. The centre has language interpreters and utilizes Indigenous birth traditions throughout your delivery. Toronto Birth Centre is located at 525 Dundas Street East.
Services
The first thing you’ll do when you sign up for care at the Toronto Birth Centre is select your midwives. A wide range of midwifery groups works out of the centre, giving you the ability to pick the group that works best for you. You’ll have all your prenatal visits within the office of your selected group. During these appointments, your midwife will check on your progress while ensuring you feel fully prepared for your delivery.
You’ll be admitted to the centre once you’re in active labor. The centre will place you in a birthing room where your support team will meet you. Once your baby is born, you’ll remain at the center for 2-4 hours while the midwives ensure you’re on the road to recovery.
The centre has a protocol in place in case there are any complications. Their first priority will always be your safety. They’ll transport you to the hospital and make sure your birth experience stays positive.
Specialty
Outside of Toronto Birth Centre’s birthing services, the centre will ensure you feel ready for every aspect of parenthood. You’ll have access to classes and workshops that will educate you on what to expect throughout childbirth. Following delivery, you’ll be able to attend their postpartum classes, where you’ll discuss common topics and struggles of early parenthood. Many of the events are available both in-person and virtually.
