About the Toronto Zoo

The Toronto Zoo’s mission is to connect people, animals, and conservation science to fight extinction. This is a place where wildlife thrives, and visitors of all ages can enjoy getting up close to many different kinds of animals from around the world. The staff and volunteers are the driving force behind the mission of conservation, valuing, and caring for the many animals. Guests at the zoo can enjoy a safe, accessible, fun, comfortable experience that encourages learning and lifelong memories!

Everything To Explore

The Toronto Zoo spans over 287 hectares and is the largest zoo in Canada, with over a million visitors each year. This zoo is divided into seven different geographic regions: Indo-Malaya, Africa, the Americas, Tundra Trek, Australasia, Eurasia, and the Canadian Domain. There are indoor and outdoor portions of the zoo, with most animals living in environments that mimic their natural habitats. The zoo also features the Kids Zoo, Waterside Theatre, and Splash Island.

The Toronto Zoo houses over 3,000 animals and is open to the public daily, year-round. In addition to animals, this zoo also features exotic plant life.

One area of the zoo, the African Rainforest Pavilion and African Savanna, is one of the zoo’s largest expansions. The African Savanna includes white lions, zebras, olive baboons, vultures, cheetahs, southern white rhinoceroses, spotted hyenas, and Masai giraffes. The African Rainforest Pavilion features the world’s largest indoor gorilla exhibits, as well as many other African species, like meerkats, red river hogs, dwarf crocodiles, lemurs, the African clawed frog, soft-shelled turtles, Royal pythons, blue-bellied rollers, and pygmy hippopotamuses.

The Kids Zoo is open daily and is a great place for exciting adventures. This area features unique photo opportunities, dinosaur artifacts, a two-story treehouse and slide, bird watching, up close animal encounters, play areas, and more. This is the perfect space for little ones to learn all about animal habitats in an engaging, interactive setting.

Specialty

The Zoomobile at the Toronto Zoo is open daily and lets visitors tour the zoo by bus. Splash Island is a great space to cool off on warm days. It is open daily and free with zoo admission. This 2-acre splash pad is filled with water spouting animals, waterfalls, and tipping buckets of water.

If your kids enjoy rides, the Conservation Carousel is open daily and offers timeless fun for all ages. Kids (and adults) can hop right on and choose a unique animal seat while they enjoy amazing views. If you prefer thrills, the TundraAir Ride is a fun way to soar through the air at speeds of up to 48 kph over the Tundra Trek. The Gorilla Climb Ropes Course is another way to experience thrills at the zoo. Kids can hang out like a gorilla while swinging, crawling, and balancing on 26 elements almost 33 feet high.

The Kids Zoo is open daily and includes a large tree house, a fun slide, and animal interactions. The Greenhouse, also included in admission, displays plants from around the world, and even has a self-guided tour. Kids can also enjoy face painting, caricatures, and henna art on the weekends.

The Toronto Zoo also holds special events throughout the year, including pajama parties and group gatherings for scout troops and other community groups.
